this is the london derby
The most thrilling games in the center of English football
Without a question, England’s football capital is London. The number of derbies is bigger than in any other city thanks to the thirteen professional teams who compete at the four top divisions. What London derbies, though, are the most noteworthy? Discover more on this blog!
North London derby
The entire North of London is on edge when Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur play. Since Arsenal relocated to Highbury in 1913, there has been a rivalry between the two clubs. The number of matches between them has caused the tension to increase steadily. Fans of the other teams are even more hated by players who join the opposition, like Sol Campbell did in 2001.
Since 1909, there have been 193 matches between Arsenal and Tottenham. With 81 victories, the Gunners had the greatest performance. The North London Derby resulted in a tie 51 times. The Spurs have 61 victories.
North West London derbies
Football rivalry exists not just between various sections of London but also inside some areas. The Stamford Bridge stadium for Chelsea is located in North West London, and when Blues players and supporters visit Arsenal, they are not received with warm arms. The emergence of Chelsea during the 1990s has led to an increase in the rivalry between Chelsea and Arsenal in recent years.
There have been 207 matches between Chelsea and Arsenal. The majority of matches were won by Arsenal (82 victories). In 59 games, the teams split the points evenly. Chelsea has 66 victories.
Chelsea – Tottenham Hotspur
The Chelsea supporters and Tottenham supporters are not exactly close pals. The games have always been contested with tension from the clubs’ first meeting in 1909. The stadiums are filled when the Spurs and Blues compete. Both the participants on the pitch and the viewers in the seats are always eager for a win in these games.
175 occasions saw Tottenham Hotspur play Chelsea, with Chelsea coming out on top 55 times. 43 of the other games were draws.
The Dockers derby
One of the longest and most competitive London derbies in English football is between Millwall and West Ham United. Never suggest that football is only a game to the followers of these teams. Football is a life-or-death issue for them. For your own club, you must battle. The Dockers Derby, so named because dockers started both clubs, is when it all comes to light. A genuine and exceptional football rivalry!
99 games of the Dockers derby have been played. West Ham United only won it 34 times, but Millwall won it 38 times. 27 contests were drawn.
East London derby
In the East of London, there is a rivalry between three teams rather than the customary derby between two clubs. All games involving these three teams are regarded as East London derbies because they all play in the same region, which is home to West Ham United, Leyton Orient, and Dagenham & Redbridge. They do, however, happen seldom because the teams frequently compete at various levels.
Since West Ham competes in the Premier League, it has been a while since they participated in an East London derby. The most recent meeting between Leyton Orient and Dagenham & Redbridge was in 2019
South London derby
The most successful team in south London, Crystal Palace, has lost track of Millwall and Charlton Athletic, its local rivals in the South London Derby. Charlton competes in League One, whereas Millwall competes in the Championship, these teams compete at a lesser level.
Since joining the Premier League in 2014, Crystal Palace has competed against teams like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur, who are larger clubs from the capital. The fact that Crystal Palace plays its home games at Selhurst Park, a true English football venue, makes those events well worth attending.
